The famous 7S26 Teardown Review

Ahh, the Seiko 7S26 movement. Cheap (you can get a decent Seiko 5 for under $75), bulletproof and oddly lacking modern features like hacking and handwinding. What makes it tick?
This is actually a repost from the Fnord days
, but after meeting with @realWatchReview
yesterday I decided to repost it. It's one of the inspirations for the site; an enormously knowledgable and informative review with crystal-clear pictures of a complete movement disassembly. I can think of a handful of comparable efforts, and someday I hope to be able to do so myself.
Go read it.
Take your time, bookmark it, peruse the pictures. It's an amazing piece of work.

This teardown
is also first-rate, and has comparisons to the predecessor 7005.
Guide to Buying a Watch, part 2
Sadly, Velociphile
has ceased blogging, he was one of the most informative and interesting voices around. This post is a repost of a list by a wealthy collector, and has a lot of wisdom in it. As I can completely affirm, it's best to save up:
1. Buy one watch that you really like, then never, ever read TimeZone, or any watch publications, again. This will save you a fortune. Especially to be avoided are the watch review, brand forum, and chatroom areas of TimeZone - the WIS contagion spreads from here... If you learn only one thing from my tale of woe, learn this! Turn back while you can.
2. Just buy that Lange (or Patek, or Rolex, or Vacheron, or whatever your personal Grand Ultimate Fetish Object is) first, and save yourself some agony and expense. Once you've gotten The Best, you may be able to resist a lot of impulse purchases, and avoid cluttering up your house with watchwinders, cases, and so on.
Lesson One, indeed.
Read the whole list
and consider hanging it on the wall. ![]()
Lesson 2 particularly resonated with me, and now that I've gotten the IWC the urge to buy really has diminished. I quite like having 2 nice watches, one dress and one versatile. I'm happy wearing either, and don't have the nagging urge to wear other watches that would otherwise sit idle.
ETA 2824 comparison
The ubiquitous ETA 2824 has many copies - ST21, SW200, Hangzhou 6300, SMC, and others. lysanderxiii on WUS
does a nice teardown versus the original.
