Some notes and pictures for the curious. You need a light-tight enclosure that will hold a watch or similar, and cost was definitely a concern. I went with ABS pipe from Home Depot, stage tape and a black foam core sheet from the hobby section of Wal-Mart. The results are kinda ugly but work great:

Detail of light pipe. Note that I ended up with three sections:

  • 4"->2" flange
  • a tiny section of 2" pipe inside the flange
  • appx 8cm of 1.5" pipe

Taking data!

In the next update, I'll show how I'm adding UV LEDs to charge the phosphor, and also a better place to hold the watch. Stay tuned!
